Its rich R&D pipeline has a large number of compounds and vaccines under development, with 47 products in advanced stages of clinical investigation (phases IIb and III). The company invested 4.5 billion euros in R&D in 2007, the 3rd largest in the pharmaceutical industry.

To improve access to quality and affordable medicines to millions of Filipinos, sanofi-aventis Philippines launched its generics arm, Winthrop Pharmaceuticals Philippines, Inc., in October 2007. Built on the enduring strengths of the sanofi-aventis Group, Winthrop is driven by a commitment to actively and responsively contribute to the reduction of healthcare cost. The Winthrop brand is in response to the public clamor for more accessible, affordably-priced quality medicines. Access to Medicines is a central element in the Group’s global strategy. An Access to Medicines Division coordinates and implements the sanofi-aventis Group’s initiatives in the fight against certain diseases which represent major public health problems in which the Group has real acknowledged expertise. The mission of the Access to Medicines program is to produce medicines in strict compliance with the Group’s quality standards and make them available to underprivileged populations at prices adjusted according to patient category within the framework of “no profit, no loss” policy. Access to Medicines is focused on six major therapeutic areas: malaria, tuberculosis, sleeping sickness, leishmaniasis, epilepsy and vaccines.
